Colors: The yellow and red are also found in the Spanish flags carried by Coronado when he came to Arizona in the sixteenth century. The blue is the same color as the blue in the United States of America flag. The copper colored star identifies Arizona as the largest producer of copper in the United States.
Symbols: Arizona is a western state, which is why the rays show a setting sun. The thirteen alternating yellow and red rays behind the copper star represent America's thirteen original colonies.
History: The current flag was created in 1910 when Col Charles W. Harris designed a flag for the Arizona Rifle Team when they attended the National Matches at Camp Perry. It has remained the state flag ever since.
